The Cost of Prevention

Lack of food and water are the two most common causes of death worldwide. Vast supplies of both tropical and desert water are rendered undrinkable due to infection with protozoan and other contaminants.

The scenario that begins with diarrhea and progresses through dehydration, shock, and death occurs frequently in much of the third world, where the major water sources are contaminated. From one-third to three-quarters of all children seen on our missions trips have signs of fever, diarrhea, abdominal distention and dehydration due to one or a combination of conditions – malaria, worm infestation and ingestion of contaminated water.

It is possible to impact the health and survival of developing world communities in the following way:

General U.S. health guidelines recommend consumption of eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day, which is hard for most adults to fulfill due to the volume of water. Eight 8-ounce glasses of water make 64 ounces or one-half gallon of water per day.

At such a volume of water consumption, the above system would meet the daily water requirements for 1,000 persons. The actual water intake of families with at least two children is probably half of the abovementioned amounts. This water purification system would be able to meet the water purification needs of 2,000 people per day.

The sum of $2.00 will meet the water purification needs of one citizen in the developing world for years.
