Most physicians have a heart and a desire to treat the poor and desolate of the world, and are a great pool of potential medical missionaries, given the proper conditions. The reality is that international missions work is an expensive proposition, with considerations that reach far beyond the costs of travel. The physician on salary at a medical institution is required to use vacation and/or personal time; and for the physician in private practice, it is necessary to pay someone to cover his/her absence from the medical practice, or accept the option of forfeiting
all income during that time period. For even the most loving heart, this is a tough financial pill to swallow.

However, covering the travel costs associated with a medical missions trip is often all that is needed to secure the physician’s commitment to join the team. Once on the mission field, most are “hooked” for life. Medical missions work is as much a life-changing experience for the provider as it is for the populace being served.
